Boys Varsity Baseball · Interviewing Bret Matthys

With baseball season around the corner we thought that you should get to know one of the players. Senior, pitcher, Bret Matthys, answered questions about himself and the upcoming season.

  • How excited are you about the upcoming season?

Very excited, we have a lot of potential. Now it’s just getting out to the field and showing what we got.

  • When did you start playing baseball?

Ever since I was able to walk and pick up a baseball bat.

  •  What are the team’s expectations about this upcoming season?

The team’s expectations for this year are very high, winning a sectional title and advancing to a regional championship are our goals.

  •  What are you going to miss the most about baseball when this season is over?

Definitely playing with all my friends on the same team for one last time.

  • What is your favorite moment of your baseball career at Hanover Central High School?

So far pitching at the Gary Railcats stadium against Lowell and being interviewed after the game.

  • What is your favorite baseball team?

  • If you had to pick another sport to play what would it be?

Golf, baseball and golf are the perfect combinations.

  • Who is your favorite player of all time?

For being a pitcher and a lefty, Mark Buehrle is someone I always looked up to.

  • If you had one player to compare your game to who would it be?

Mark Buehrle because he is lefty and uses more control than velocity to get guys out. For hitting people always say I look like Anthony Rizzo so I guess that’s it.

  • What are your plans after high school?

After high school I will be going to Purdue Northwest to further my baseball and academic career.
