The girls had to play two games Saturday to win the conference tournament.
The first game was against River Forest, for the third time this year. River Forest was up to the challenge, looking to avenge two earlier losses to the Lady Wildcats. Thanks to a late 3-point basket by Bridget Noel, Hanover was able to grab the lead late in the 4th quarter and hold on for a 23-21 victory. Sienna Antkiewicz lead the team in scoring with 11 points. Noel had 5 points, followed Abbie Casten and Ava Vanderhye with 2 points, and Danielle Brink with 1 point. Playing good defense and team-basketball were Natalie Eckart and Lexi Smith.
In the championship game, Hanover squared off against a tough Lake Station team. Holding onto a small 11-10 lead at half time, the Lady Wildcats would eventually take control of the game in the second half, on its way to a convincing 30-14 win. Defense was the key to the second half surge, with Shea Garringer, Lexi Smith, and Danielle Brink all playing exceptional defense. Scoring was provided by Natalie Eckart with 1 point, Abbie Casten, Ava Vanderhye, and Anna Prim with 2 points, Bridget Noel with 6 points, and Sienna Antkiewicz with 10 points.
Good team defense and unselfish basketball was the key to The Lady Wildcats success.
The team next plays away Monday at Kankakee Valley (A & B game).
